A Mars A Day Helps You Work Rest And Play
Aug. 2nd, 2007 02:42 pmOn January 4th 2004, Spirit touched down in the Gusev Crater. Three weeks later Opportunity landed in the Meridiani Planum.
The two rovers had a 90 day mission to explore Mars.
Unfortunately the two plucky travellers seem to suffering a bit lately, but having done more than 1200 extra days overtime I guess that's to be expected.
Spirit has lost her front right wheel - although this has caused a couple of scientific discoveries due to the dragging wheel scraping away the surface revealing a whole host of surprises.
Opportunity is currently pinned down by a storm and with dust blocking out the sun from her solarpanels she's running low on juice, and with temperatures dropping into the low -30's she might not have enough power to keep her heaters running.
It's strange to get attached to lumps of metal 200,000,000 km away but after getting weekly - and sometimes daily - email updates you kinda feel they're part of the family
I'm still a geeky!tingle after Beagle II's cameo in the Transformers movie, at least I now know my brief time working on the search'n'rescue project wasn't wasted :)
